The Plough and the Stars: Boring, theatrical filmizations of Sean O’Casey’s play with Foster as Irish revolutionary leader and Stanwyck as long-agonizing spouse who prays for his life. The Kingdom: The terrorism story is reinvented as an action film. It is a blood-pumping tale of an elite FBI team that voyages surreptitiously to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to examine a massive explosion at a U.S. living area. Cast includes Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, Jason Bateman, Ashraf Barhom, Ali Suliman, Jeremy Piven, Danny Huston, Richard Jenkins, Frances Fisher, Anna Deavere Smith, and Tim McGraw. Blind Faith: 2 brothers, one a patrol commander and the other a defense attomey, find their relation and their own sense of self esteem as black gentlemen in 1950s America turned upside down while the commander’s child is implicated in a murderer. Tough and striking drama, which opens in the late ’80s, concentrates on the racial separate and unfair due process system. Cast includes Courtney B. Vanee, Charles S. Dutton, Kadeem Hardison, Lonette McKee, and Garland Whitt. (107 minutes, 1998)
Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School: While a current widower assists a dying mishap sufferer it sets in motion a journey to find the poor man’s long lost love at a school reunion. This leads to a ballroom dance school and a dull, hokey, excessively sentimentalized tale. Cast includes Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, Sean Astin, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Donnie Walhberg, David Paymer, Camryn Manheim, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, and Elden Henson. (103 minutes, 2006)
Danny Boy: Ambitious although arrogant, unrelentingly dull melodrama of sax player Rea, who trades his sax for a gun after observing a triple killing. This was Jordan’s directorial debut, which he additionally did the screenplay. He and leading guy Rea later reteamed for The Weeping Game. (92 minutes, 1982)
Straight Out of Brooklyn: The story of a black family’s going nowhere existence in the ghettos of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the oldest son’s plan to rob a local drug dealer to turn tings around for the family. Cast includes George T. Odom, Ann D. Sanders, Lawrence Gilliard, Jr., Barbara Sanon, Reana E. Drummond, and Mark Malone. (91 minutes, 1991)
Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute” Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)
Kim: Exciting action film based on Kipling classic set in 1880s India, with British cadets combatting disobedient locals. Cast includes Errol Flynn, Dean Stockwell, Paul Lukas, Thomas Gomez, and Cecil Kellaway. 113 minutes, 1950)
