Firstly, the idea of burn in confuses me a bit. Some people say this is a problem, others say its nothing to worry about. Figuring out what the truth is has been a bit difficult. Is this something I need to worry about given how I'm going to be using it?
Second. How much heat do they really produce? Again, this really varies depending on where I read.
Lastly, do plasmas use a lot more energy then an LCD?
I really appreciate any help and advice you can give.

New Plasma TVs do not have problems with burn-in anymore! It's impossible now!
Today's Plasma TVs use about the same amount of energy as similar sized LCD TVs…except for LED LCD TVs!
Plasma TV's do give off some heat, but it's not substantial until you get into the very large sized TVs. Say 55" or larger!
As a owner of a Panasonic 42" Plasma TV, i absolutely love my TV. I'm an occasional gamer and love watching sports & movies on this TV. Picture quality is unbelievable! I highly recommend a Plasma TV!

My 42" Sanyo Plasma TV gets quite warm and does exhibit raster burn-in dramatically on the sides when watching full screen. I bought it 2 years ago. My 32" LCD that I bought at the same time does not get noticeably warm. I am not a gamer and only watch sports and movies. Both TV's work fine for me, other than the Plasma burn-in.
