Obviously the difference is highly noticeable and HD is missing, but I'd like to know how much it is noticeable, and whether people are even playing these consoles on CRTs.

Suggestion:
It is insanely noticeable. When playing on a HD TV, colors are vibrant, textures are sharp, and one of the biggest things is that it will look a lot more clear on bigger TVs. When you are playing in 480p (Standard def) on a big TV, than the image is expanded to fit your screen. The more it has to expand, the less clear the picture is. When you play in 1080p, it can fill the whole screen with an image without having to expand. Making for a clear picture.
