Superman – the Man of Steel

Growing up in the 1950s was great. This was a time when life seemed a little slower, when dinner time was family time and everyone gathered around the TV set on Sunday night to watch the Ed Sullivan Show. My brother and I had our favorite shows, such as Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Howdy Doody and Superman.

Yes, Superman the Man of Steel. Every week we waited patiently for this defender of justice to fly into our den to foil the evildoers. “Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! Its a bird! Its a plane! Its Superman!” Wow, those were the days, an innocent time in life when TV was new and neighborhood gatherings were a regular summer event. In my neighborhood we would gather at a one house each bringing a special dish of food for everyone to eat. The original block party.

Getting back to Superman, we also grew up on what are now collectible comic books. DC Comics, Marvel Comics we had them all. I sure wish I still had some of those old vintage Superman and Batman comic books. You could retire on what those comic books would sell for today. Its unbelievable!

Thinking about those times gives me a good feeling, a warm feeling about family, friends, playing out on the street till all hours of the night without any fear of any evil doer coming to the area. Our neighborhood was like a close knit family, everyone looking out for one another. This is how it was then.

In today’s world life is a lot faster. Faster than a speeding bullet? You bet it is. Some things have greatly changed comparatively from when I grew up to the world we live in today. I’m not talking about changes such as technology which in itself has been an amazing journey. I’m talking about people, relationships, the fast lane. Our neighborhoods have expanded to include the world with chat rooms with common interests that gives us an opportunity to give your opinion, to be heard all over the world.

We should enjoy the fruits of our technology that reach out across the world but we need to get back to basics. From time to time we need to slow down, we need to take a deep breath and take in this glorious world full of wonderment. Enjoy the company of one another, have a neighborhood picnic and watch out for each other.
