Suggestion:
There are a lot of great answers here, especially the Johnny Walker Blue. But, what we don't know about your bf is what liquor he likes best, if he even likes liquor.
This is where you can have some fun and actually have him tell you without knowing he told you. Ask questions like " I went to the liquor store with *blank* and saw all these bottles of whiskey that were this amount or that amount, if you had the money would you ever spend that much on a bottle of liquor?" or " If not, what would you buy?" Or you can just think up all kinds of different questions that will allow him to give you an answer without giving away your intentions.
You don't want to buy something that he really doesn't like. Besides, it would tell him how much you cared about him to make sure that you got something you knew he would love. It would mean so much more than a shot in the dark gift. It may seem difficult, but I promise it'll work.
