Suggestion:
AV daddy is right and since you can find a bluray for around 140 dollars by Sony go for this. If you play vidoegames at all and can shell out a little more cash get a PS3 unit game unit built in bluray and it also has internet hookup capabilities.
Also consider that probably within the next 5-7yrs regular dvd's will become the way of VHS. Might as well upgrade and start a bluray collection?.
PS like avdaddy said most if not all bluray players play reg. dvds and some even play burned discs and divx format.

As AVDANDY pointed out, if you are looking for a DVD player, then you aren't even using half of the video capacity of your TV. A DVD plays movies at 480 resolution. An HDTV is capable of 1080 resolution. Buying an HDTV and connecting a DVD player is like buying a Ferrari and mounting a trailer hitch to it. Don't ruin a nice TV by connecting crappy devices.
As for which Blu Ray player to get…
Any Blu Ray player is better than a DVD player, so it doesn't really matter. Just go with the one that has the features that you like and is in your price range. I would recommend taking a look at LG though.
I would also recommend not buying a crappy home theater in a box when you get around to getting some audio. These things are the bane of the audio industry. I personally believe that everyone who buys these should be hit in the head with a tack hammer and tossed off a cliff for fear that they will further plague our society with their ignorance. But that's just me.
Sony makes an excellent BD player and so does Oppo as well as Samsung. I agree with the above that it is silly to get a standard DVD player when you can get four times the resolution with BD (Blu-Ray). And the prices of BD have come down a lot. Both the disks and the players are almost reasonably priced now. But if you want a brand new movie you are going to pay up the butt. That's the price of technology. All of the above manufacturers also still make some very good DVD players but they will not take advantage of the excellent resolution of your TV.
Forget about buying a DVD player. Buy a Blu Ray player. It can play all your DVD's & CD's. Best of all, with Blu Ray, you're taking advantage of your TV's HD capability. If you're gamer, then consider a PlayStation, all the functions of a Blu Ray player plus games.
